Excited

It's Christmas time....and what does that mean, the last Harry Potter book title is now known.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I hope that means she is just wrapping up the end of the book. So maybe we'll get the book next Christmas time, I think the summer may just be too soon. Not to mention that title sounds extremely ominous...

hmmm harry potter and death rites...i suppose that ties in with the horcruxes- voldemort is trying to bypass death and harry must find the ways (holy rites) to send his soul from this earth. Or I would propose that something big happens at halloween, when the spirits of the dead can return to the earth and possibly help harry defeat voldemort. those are just my initial thoughts on the new title. Anyone have something good?

Little Update

Hey kids- I just wanted to say a little hello. It feels so good to be done with the first semester. Much to my surprise, even with the extremely poor showing in analysis, I still did really well in both linear algebra and numerical methods classes. So well that I get to keep my assistantship and am not on academic probation. Hurray. Now for some much needed r & r.

Scott got me started on checking out this little comic strip. it's amusing- my life in a nutshell pretty much.

I wish everyone a really happy restful holiday season and happy new year. I'll probably catch you all on the flip side- lots of parties and baking and storing up energy like a battery, and yeah...a bit of missing someone (2 months complete...well just about, I can do it.)

Wow

If we aren't being technical, today at 2:15 I have completed my first semester of graduate school (granted I still have 3 finals I have to complete in the next week, but that is okay). I am slightly amazed that we are here now. I remember the move to Columbia, the first days of orientation, the complete insanity of the beginning of classes-as if it were just yesterday. It feels surreal. In comparison to what I would have been doing- I feel totally accomplished. Not that I'm knocking being back in Jersey or working at Brookdale, it just seems like all of my talents and energy were well spent. I will be so happy to spend the next couple of weeks relaxing and storing up my energy for another round in January.

Oh as super happy news- my third analysis exam...oh this is so exciting, I'm so happy about it. I got a 94. After the disaster at the beginning of the semester, I feel like I have redeemed myself somewhat. Now just have to make it through the finals.

What else has been going on- besides exams- well this evening I am heading out for fun with the crew- dinner at Carolina Wings, the Lights at the Zoo (has anyone noticed that fact that I love the Zoo), and then a movie. My last little respite before major studying.

Anyways...I probably need to find some super warm clothing for this evening seeing as it is- I'm finally saying it- COLD here in Columbia. Catch ya later.

Domestic Traveller

I am typing this while sitting in the Newark Airport. I am too cheap to buy the 7.95 access to the internet to do this post live in real time. You would think that this is such a heavily trafficked airport that the internet access would be free. Hell the Columbia airport has free internet access.

I have been sitting around the airport since about 11:30 am. My flight doesn't leave until 2:55. Talk about being here early. But I suppose that is understandable- my parents wanted to attend the last Rutger's home game of the season. So I get the short end of the stick and have to sit around the airport by myself for like 4 hours. I really wish I was traveling with someone. So many families and relatives all moving around in large groups that it is somewhat depressing. I know who I would like to be traveling with but ... yeah not going to happen for a while. I feel kinda bad to be complaining. But the holiday would have been so much more fun.

About all of that Turkey-Day goings-on It was surprisingly uneventful. Outside of the fact that grandma is really losing her head, it was a good day. I made a massive load of mashed potatoes - lately each time I've been doing it I make it just a tad bit differently. Thank goodness it has tasted good each time. It would have been horrible if the masked potatoes turned out really yucky and disgusting with 18 people around.

I probably should be studying right now. But I just can't do it. Studying sucks all the life out of me. When I get back to Columbia I only have a couple of more weeks to deal with- only 4 more exams so it seems, one this week and 3 finals. Then a long drive back home with Happy Car. I haven't decided how long I will stay in Jersey...probably from Christmas through New Year's, then make the trip back to Columbia again.

Jersey here I come!!

Wow, it has been quite a while. So much as gone on that I should share. I probably won't remember all of it anyways.

Two weekends ago, the now dubbed "crew" went out camping for Greg's birthday. Yes camping. I went out camping. I haven't been out camping since I was in Girl Scouts. Girl Scout camp was a disaster. Not that I did not have a good time, but it was the unfortunate time and place where I learned of my inability to stand the sight of my own blood. That's right - don't ever let me do any cooking when I am camping. I have the tendency to cut myself, see blood, and faint at the drop of blood. You will all be glad to know that no such happening occured this time around but I am still weary of the whole experience. Saturday afternoon into the evening was absolutely gorgeous (pictures are up on facebook). But at about 9:30 it decided to rain. And rain it did. So after spending about 4 hours in a sopping wet tent in near close freezing weather, I sucked up and asked Trey (who was so kinda as to offer me a spot to sleep in his tent) if I could sleep in his very dry truck. In about 3-4 hours time I had nearly dried myself up in his truck when low and behold Trey comes to join me. So of the group of about 8 us, I think we were the only two that woke up and were dry. But the rest of the time was quite enjoyable.

I had a linear algebra exam, which didn't go over so hot. But the professor said not to worry, everything should be okay. I've been doing a lot of grading for my calculus sections- exams and reports. I would be delighted if I never had to read a project report ever again. I only have one more big exam before finals kick in. Can you believe it, after Turkey-day I only have 2 weeks til the end of the semester and then finals. It has been moving along quite quickly.

In other news, Andrew is settled in Iraq with his platoon - which means I get to start writing letters to him. I've been really holding off on them because I know if I get started on one I might kill a good portion of a day writing it. I probably won't have lots of time to do it until I get the semester over with - but I am going to try anyways.

Tomorrow morning bright and early I should be hopping on my plane back home to Jersey for the big T-day. Huge family gathering will ensue, and I am quite certain that I will get no, I repeat, no work done for the next week.

Oh I promised Suzer Laurie's Baked Potato Soup recipe but Theresa's little twist.

Baked Potato Soup
3-4 medium sized idaho potatoes
1/3 cup of flour
1/2 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp salt
4 oz of light processed cheese (Velveeta Light is quite yummy)
1/2 cup of fat free sour cream
14 oz can of fat free chicken broth

Normally one would bake those potatoes, but I don't enjoy burning myself so much. So instead I peel the potatoes and cut them into 1/2 inch-3/4inch cubes. Throw that in a good sized pot and fill the rest with water. Just enough to cover the tops of the potatoes. Bring the water up to a boil. Check the potatoes to see if they are done by making sure that a fork pierces them without any effort. Strain out the water and put the potatoes off to the side in another bowl for a moment. In the same pot, add the flour and whisk in about half of the chicken broth. Once it is blended, add back in the potatoes, pepper, and salt. Cook over medium heat until it is thick and bubbly. Add the cheese; stirring while it melts. While you stir it is best to add the remaining chicken broth until the soup is as thick as you would like. Remove from heat and mix in the sour cream.

Yum Yum Yum. Just so you know that beginning part is exacting how I start making mashed potatoes. (always mashed by hand, none of the using a machine works with me).

I suppose I better go get a little bit of relaxing in before I go to bed early and then awake up super early. Catch ya on the flip side.

Infestation

I woke up yesterday morning to what must be the oddest thing I have had to deal with since I moved to Columbia. It seems a fairly large portion of the SC ladybug population has decided that my balcony/apartment would be a great place to start a colony. Yes, a colony. I really don't mind it if they are chilling out on my balcony, but when they just started walking in through the cracks in my door (the door doesn't sit flush against the doorjam) I hit the breaking point. I'm not going to house those critters when they aren't paying any part of my rent. :oP on the lady bugs. My first attempts at trying to capture them and throw them out the door did no good. They just keep tcoming through the little crack again. *Mind you, I had slated my morning for studying.* I then consult the father. What sort of bug spray? What sort of regiment to keep them out of my apartment? I then make a trip out to Publix (my favorite place to be) and pick up some all natural bug spray. I start spraying the crap out of them. I mean I know that the ladybug is a good bug. Not good though when I find them dead all over my apartment. Who knows what sort of diseases they may be carrying and such. But I suppose the good news is that I have decreased the population of ladybugs chillin' out in/out of my apartment. The only thing is I have exhausted my can of bug spray and need to make another trip to Publix to get more.

In other super big news, Rutgers...you know the state university of NJ. You know that football team, which I've watched games for god knows 8-10 years now, just beat Louisville (#3 ranked in the nation) in convincing underdog fashion. I guess they just needed me out of the state to do something big. Very very excited. They are 9-0. Bowl game here we go...maybe even BCS game.

I made yummy baked ziti and garlic bread for Wednesday night dinner. It was a hit. Hurray. That was a good feeling. I do have lots of leftovers though, so I'll be eating that for quite a while. But that is cool.

I am doing pretty well. I've gotten used to things now, so that is good. Still unhappy with the situation, but I'm okay with it. It is almost Thanksgiving, so time is moving (although this past two weeks have felt like an eternity). Just gotta keep plugging along.

Well I need to get my butt back to studying for my Linear exam on Monday. This is going to be nuts.

sheesh

I thought I was the only crazy person who did laundry on a Monday evening. Evidently this is not the case as all of the wash machines in my building are full. Who does that?!!?!?

I psuedo remembered what I wanted to write about yesterday. My parents came to visit me for the weekend. It was great to see them since well..it's been 3 months. I suppose though that I really am starting to feel like my apartment is my space- since after a bit... my tiny apartment just didn't seem like it was big enough for all three of us to occupy it at the same time. I almost wanted to scream out and say, "All this mine...no invade space." But I'm a good gal...I guess I'm just used to all this space and having if for myself. I couldn't operate normally in my own apartment for the day they were here. It was weird just having to make a comment on ...i'm going to do work now...I haven't done that in three months...i just sit down and i do it. Maybe I'm rusty on the social skills now - being by myself and all. oh well, it was a fun weekend though and I got no work accomplished so this week just feels :oP.

This week you ask:
1. lots o studying for linear algebra exam next Monday
2. no class tomorrow (election day)- but i have to make up classes for DE...so i'll be in the math building for several hours
3. Wednesday night dinner this week is on me - baked ziti and garlic bread, yum
4. See the bro row in Augusta??
5. some birthday party action- no not mine...someone elses

It has been a week since Andy left. I still ache on the inside - and I really haven't given myself the time to get lost in all of it. I don't think graduate school really allows you to get lost in anything other than your work. It makes me feel guilty- since I feel like I'm avoiding those fears. So i know it will all come back and bite me in the ass when I least expect it- probably during Thanksgiving with my entire father's family gathered for the first time in like 10 years, yeah that would be superb.

oh well I guess I should get pick out some laundry now...catch ya later.

oops

I had something meaningful to say. I swear I did. But I lost it. I seem to be doing that a lot lately. Losing my head mostly. I guess when I find it again, I'll have a few minutes and enough mind to actually type it out and post. In the meantime, I'm going to head to bed - another long hard week is fast approaching, and at the moment I can't bear sitting up late in the evening (my mind wanders).

check back in sometime soon I think.

Study Break

Well, I'm going to take a little while to stop my studying, even though I know I really need to know this stuff. I figured I would write a little bit about my fall break and all that has ensued from that point on.

I spent most of the start of my fall break on an airplane- Yes cramped between people...or cramped in a tiny seat- even tiny by my standards. I guess the cool story I have from my plane flights is the trip from Dallas to El Paso. I guess the usual deal is that I end up being seated with some soldier or officer in the Army. I spend my time chatting with them for most of the flight. Not this time. El Paso was in an uproar, because the Rolling Stones were coming to play at the Sun Bowl on Friday evening. So this plane flight I actually got to sit next to a group of the sound engineers/roadies for the Rolling Stones. The poor things seemed really exhausted. But the guy I sat next to seemed to open up really quickly- talked about all the places they went to, and showed me pictures of the stage setup at different venues. Then proceeded to tell me he really didn't like the job at all, cause he was away from his son in Germany for like 5 months out of the year every year. It was an insightful trip.

The time with Andrew was really good- could have been better if his commander had been a bit nice and given him a bit of time off. But I have no control over that. I got a bit of work done while he was at work. We went out to a couple of nice restaurants, smoked some cigars (yes, they are growing on me quite quickly), went up high on the mountain, to the museum of science and the art museum. It was just so good. I love the rhythm we just fall into. Leaving on Sunday was...very difficult.

The past week brought me back to reality- huge tests, quizzes, and project that needed to be worked on. The test is tomorrow evening, quiz on Wednesday, project due Thursday. Not exactly pretty but I should be able to relax a bit after that.

Yesterday Andy left. It was not a good day. We spoke 3 times during the day. I have come to accept the fact that I haven't been able to be near him in the continental US. I've come to terms with that pain. But this...it hit me like a ton of bricks. Emotional hurt for me translates to physical pain and illness, cause that is just how I am. Last night was horrible- how quickly after that last phone call- I was immobile, unable to breathe, stand...function like a normal human being. I was violently ill. I've really only felt like that one other time in my life, and that time was/is just as difficult. No control over anything.

I hope that this can still be a place that I can outlet all of this without it seeming like "i'm that girl whose guy is over there". I think this helps a bit. Thanks to everyone who dropped me a line...or I talked too, it really really helps. I can't wait for this year to go flying by and Andrew is back here.

Hmm happy thoughts- my parents are coming this weekend, hurray!!! Only two weeks until the huge Sparacio family Turkey Day shin dig takes place- oh that will be..interesting.

Crud- I've spent to much time with my feelings and such. I need to attack this analysis stuff now. I will try very hard to post a bit more often so you all know I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.

End transmission.

ouch.

If I don't say this now I will surely break
As I'm leaving the one I want to take
Forgive the urgency but hurry up and wait
My heart has started to separate

There now, steady love, so few come and don't go
Will you won't you, be the one I always know
When I'm losing my control, the city spins around
You're the only one who knows, you slow it down

If ever there was a doubt
My love she leans into me
This most assuredly counts
She says most assuredly

It's always have and never hold
You've begun to feel like home
What's mine is yours to leave or take
What's mine is yours to make your own

Oh, oh
Be my baby
Ohhhhh
Oh, oh
Be my baby
I'll look after you

Fall Break

It is halfway through the semester here, so that only means that Fall Break has descended upon us. I'll be hopping on a plane in a few short hours to make my way to Texas for the weekend.

Just so you know what has been happening- I went to the SC state fair last friday. Now I'm used to carnivals and such, but this...this was huge. So large in fact that they provide a map of where everything is. There were all the normal things that one usually finds at a fair- except for Zeppoles, which in my humble opinion are the most fantastic fried carnival food one can eat. I had lots of fun eating and going on all the different rides and nearly scaring the ____ out of myself.

I managed to get my hands on a ticket to the SC vs. Tennessee football game. Probably the last big home game before the huge rivalry between Clemson gets started. Oh I won a game last week in fantasy football. I've been doing quite poorly so that has been a nice change.

In a couple of weeks I get to take the parents around Columbia. Hurray- since I haven't seen them since oh, yeah they day they moved me in, which is about 3 months. Don't know what exactly we'll do, but I have a little while to figure that out.

Oh holy moly- I need to stop now- have to get to my Calc 2 maple labs. Joy. I may be nice and let them out early today.

Weekend

Well, I have made it through another week. I've decided that this weekend should be filled with relaxation- which is great because the huge storm front moving through Columbia is really messing with my head at the moment. I hope to get most of my little around-the-apartment things done plus a couple of other projects finished up.

I am starting to feel better about the week, which is a good thing. I still have loads of school-related stuff that I should be getting to, but I think I can get away with taking my time on it- new homework sets, and grading two huge stacks of calc project reports. I might take a trip out to meet some of the other math grad students for what has been deemed "Saturday/Sunday tea".

I'm gonna brag a bit- I just have to say this is a great thing about being down south. It is October and I can walk around outside without any jacket. But the cool thing is the leaves are starting to turn a bit. It is a neat experience. I really like the area- if you discount the fact that I think I'm allergic to the state.

Flush it down the toilet

Yes, so I was thinking I would have a good week this week. I actually felt good. Now, I want to vomit. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I haven't had dinner yet, and am really just going on a bagel and a peanut butter sandwich all day. I propose another reason. I got my two exams back this week. Drum roll please- and my combined total score.....87 points. And I'll let you infer which class I got 15 points on the exam for. I think it will be quite obvious and logically clear. A rigorous proof follows (expletives have been carefully deleted)-

The professor missed half of the scheduled class times. He believes that every proof we do, it's obvious what tricks we need to use. Well, we don't have the freakin' tricks cause you didn't give us any ____________. I love how you assume that everything is clear and obvious- yes to you, mr. i've been doing this for 40 years. Not to me, I haven't taken an analysis course in over 4 years. Stupid _______ analysis. I think I threw up in my mouth several times during class. And then pretty much tell half the class you know, you really can't recover from your scores. Thanks buddy, I'll go jump off a bridge now too.

Yes-let us add exam scores to me starting to not feel so ______. Back to square one again. ____ me.

Finally the weekend

I figure I owe everyone a post. I have somewhat fallen off the face of the map. After Andy left, I was supposed to have a linear algebra exam on Friday of that week. The professor decided right beforehand to push the exam back one class period. Hurray for more studying time, but it didn't really matter. So this past week I had two exams - linear algebra and analysis. Yeah that wasn't cool at all. I feel Jen's pain that she went through the past two years. I totally failed both of those exams. I shouldn't have failed the linear algebra since I actually sort of knew what I was doing. But it feels so refreshing to hear that everyone else in my class thought the exams were just as bad as I did.

So this week has been pretty much as hellish as it can get. But at least I have the weekend to look forward to- like the wine-tasting get together, possibly a trip to the mall, sleeping late. I do have a bunch of other school crap...like grading and homework sets to that need to get done. Oh well.

Thanks everyone for the support on the last post. I am feeling better about everything but...it does hit me every now and again at the weirdest most inappropriate times- like when i'm speaking to my professors. I guess I'm just getting used to the reality of the situation.

Ack I need to eat and get ready for the shindig.

Signing off.

Empty

This past weekend has been absolutely amazing. Monday on the other hand....the opposite. It is the first time since I've been here that my apartment actually felt like a home. Having Andrew here was wonderful. Enjoyed a delicious dinner out Friday evening at a new place called Al's Upstairs. Really outstanding Italian food, very upscale, but god it was worth it. Saturday we went out tailgating with a couple of the friends I've made here at SC. Made a couple of yummy late evening dinners - with a little help of course. Not to mention someone started me on a very very bad behavior. But goodness, those cigars are quite soothing and relaxing.

But today, is not so great. Okay, so maybe I heard that I did everything right on my linear algebra quiz- big freakin' whooop-dee-do. But I left Andrew at the airport about an hour ago. My entire drive back to my apartment was a fight. I could feel the water welling up. I managed to make it back without accident and up to my place without really looking too horribly, but the second I closed that door-I found myself on the floor. I couldn't control it. My entire body just hurts - it aches. I managed to calm down a bit to go into the kitchen, but I saw dishes from breakfast this morning and it started all over again. It seems like everything is missing- it's all wrong.

I don't believe I've ever felt in this much pain- with one exception. I thought I was stronger. I don't think I'll get much sleep tonight- something is very very empty now and will be for a while. God, this week is just going to be a disaster.

I need to somehow calm down...I thought this would help a bit...but I haven't stopped sobbing at all.

Still Kickin'

Thanks to everyone who thought of me on my birthday. I really appreciate it.

I have made it through two whole weeks of class. In fact, I am quite proud of myself. But I did overstress myself quite a bit. Thus I have a bit of a sore throat now. But I can handle that. I am actually getting to the point where I am somewhat understanding what is going on in my classes. Comprehending what the profs are saying is extremely helpful.

It's also been great forming a new group of friends. Getting invited out to dinners and hang outs and game watching parties - has really helped me get over the being in a new place and missing everything that I know. Speaking of dinners and such - we went out to this sushi restaurant right by Ft. Jackson. The building isn't the most inviting place, but goodness the food was great. I have to remember to keep it in mind whenever I have company. I also went out to a totally southern restaurant chain called Lizards Thicket. Talk about fried everything. It was really yummy - not to mention cheap.

So I guess you could say I'm doing well - outside of my neuroticism about classes. Going to head out for a day of tailgating and football a bit later. SC vs. Georgia - you should watch it, 7:45 on ESPN. Maybe you'll see me on tv.

Only a couple of more days til I get a visitor = trying to get all of my work out of the way, plus lots of cleaning.

end transmission.

a little worse for wear

I owe Suzer a couple of recipes so those are just a little lower. I am surviving I suppose. I had a quiz in linear today- I messed up half of the one question quiz. Great way to start off the weekend. Guess it's karma for me not really studying. Smooth, Theresa. Real smooth. I've seriously been reconsidering my whole ph.d notion. The masters track is looking really nice. I thought I was ambitious, but I suppose not. Maybe I'm just a minimalist. A masters could really almost let me do anything. How many people do you know have a masters in math? I guess I shouldn't rush into making up my mind so soon. It's only been a week and half really.

Oh I went out with Amanda, a bunch of her friends, and Ben from the grad program last night. We all got together to watch the USC vs Mississippi State game. We won if anyone cares 15-0. It was a lot of fun- had lots of yummy sort of food. Played a game of in the dark hide and seek. It's fun making new friends.

For Suz and cooking fiends everywhere I present my chicken and mushrooms recipe, and bbq pulled pork. I shall also rate difficulty...although I tend to only make things that are easy.

Chicken and Mushrooms - Simple: makes about 4-6 servings

What you need:
1/4 cup of flour
1 tsp of salt
1/4 tsp of pepper
package of skinless chicken breasts (about 6 pieces...or you can get chicken tenderloins)
1/4 cup of butter/margarine
1/4 cup of lemon juice from concentrate
8 ounces of sliced fresh mushrooms (about 2 cups)
Hot cooked rice

What to do:
Combine flour, salt and pepper. Coat chicken in mixture. In large skillet, brown the chicken in butter/margarine on both sides until golden brown. Add lemon juice and mushrooms. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for about 20 minutes. Serve over rice. **I tend to add a little more lemon juice about half of the way through the simmering process, cause well I like the lemony taste.**

Barbeque Pulled Pork - A Marathon: makes a lot. I suggest you make it only if you have lots of people around, or else you will be eating it for longer than you thought possible. Here goes nothing...

What you need:
1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
2 medium yellow onions, diced
2 tbs chili pepper
1 tbs cumin
2 tsp paprika
1 tsp cayenne
12 ounces of beer (lager)
3/4 cup of ketchup
3/4 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup whole grain mustard
2 tbs tomato paste
chipotle pepper and adobo
1 5lb bone-in Boston Butt pork

What to do:
1. Preheat oven to 300. Heat oil in Dutch oven over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook until the onions are light brown.
2. Increase heat to high; add chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne and cook, stirring until fragrant. *It won't take long, trust me..it'll hit you...* Add beer, ketchup, vinegar, mustard, tomato paste, a dash of chipotle pepper and adobo; bringing it to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer uncovered until slightly thickened (10 mins). Meanwhile, trim the fat from the pork.
3. Remove pan from heat and add pork. Spoon the sauce over it. Cover pan, and place it in the oven and bake for 1.5 hours. Turn pork over, cover w/sauce, and bake for another 1.5 hours. Uncover and back until fork turns easily in the meat, 1 to 2 more hours.
4. Transfer pork to large bowl and cover w/foil. Pour sauce in measuring cup and refridgerate until fat and sauce separate, 15 min. Skim off fat. Return sauce to heat in pan (medium high until hot, 4 min).
5. Remove bone and remaining fat from meat. Bone should easily slip away from meat. Pull pork apart into shreds with 2 forks. Add hot sauce to meat; stir to combine. Serve hot.

I made it to the weekend!

I managed it. I've made it out alive. Breakdown:

PDE class - (i shortened it...I don't like the long name) seems like it will be a good class. prof is good outside of a little difficulty of my understanding him. I just think it will take me a bit of time to get used to him.

Linear Algebra- prof is romanian and has some really good explanations. Only she speaks really quickly. So I really need to work on getting everything down fast.

Analysis- well the prof is apparently a very important person in the math community and is giving a talk in Spain at a huge math conference so he won't be back for another week or so. I guess hurray no class

I went out on the town with a new friend in the math department last night. We hit up Five Points and went to several bars - Speakeasy's, Jake's, Sharky's, Group therapy, and Good Times. I had a lot of fun. There were a lot of students out and by a lot...I mean a lot. I think we could have fit the entire Dickinson senior class at one of these bars. Yeah, it was absurd.

I went to the apartment pool party this evening. Met some really nice people. Had some beer, a couple of jello shooters (yeah theresa...jello shooters, that is a new experience), pulled pork...yum. I got invited to the opening game at SC - don't know if I'll do that yet. I haven't decided.

I think tomorrow I will make some meatballs and sauce. Also get to work on my ...well work, cause that is what it is. Well I might go enjoy some tv or something like that...catch ya later.

Not Nervous, not nervous...not nervous

Yeah, little tiny bit nervous about classes tomorrow. I know I shouldn't be. For some reason this is like a huge mountain. I can't quite figure out why. Like I don't trust my own thought processes anymore. That for some reason everyone else is on surer footing then I am.

I just need to make it through the first classes. I can handle that - I think. Then lots of alcohol. Lots of it. Friday Night.

I like this group- The Fray... song She Is
Do not get me wrong I cannot wait for you to come home
For now you're not here and I'm not there, it's like we're on our own
To figure it out, consider how to find a place to stand
Instead of walking away and instead of nowhere to land

This is going to break me clean in two
This is going to bring me close to you

She is everything I need that I never knew I wanted
She is everything I want that I never knew I needed
(2x)

It's all up in the air and we stand still to see what comes down
I don't know where it is, I don't know when, but I want you around
When it falls into place with you and I, we go from if to when

Last Weekend of Freedom

Yes. It is my last weekend of freedom. Thursday is the start of classes. I always enjoy my first day of classes. Except this time I'm quite nervous. I guess this will show if I really know much of anything at all. At least I only have to prove myself in 3 classes. Just 3. What a relief!!

Classes:

Linear Algebra
Analysis 1
Difference Methods in Numerical Partial Differental Equations with Time-Dependence (say that title 10 times fast)

Oh yes, the long named class- that is the one I picked! The first two are part of the program. Have to take them. On top of these three classes- I have two Calc 2 sections. Reprieve is that I don't have to teach the class. I just have to do the recitation and their Maple lab. oh both sections are completely full. So that brings my student count to a grand total of 56. I don't mind the two sections. I even don't mind the 56 students. I used to know 100+ students a fall semester at Brookdale. It is the pure simple fact that I have Calc 2. The whole last portion of Calc 2 is the bane of my existence. I despise doing just straight sequences and series. I hate finding the error. I loath it. But I really don't have any say in my class assignment. At least my name wasn't so far alphabetically that I would have to teach a class. Then I might just shoot myself in the foot.

Anyways, I am going to try to enjoy my weekend. Meet up the with parents tomorrow. Pick up some extra calc books so I don't feel so bad about the ta-ing. Plus get out of the way of all the little freshies who are moving in this weekend. Want to avoid that at all costs.

Oh I made cookies last night. That was fun. I'm still trying to get used to my kitchen. I'm not used to the electric stove unit that I have. But I have yet to make any food that I needed to throw out and try again with. I guess that is a good sign. :o)

Random Encounters

So I've tried to make nice nice with the people who work my apartment building. Just so happens, the maintenance guy is from Jersey. New Brunswick, no less. So that is really nice. He's taken to calling me "Jersey" and chatting whenever we meet in the lobby area.

It was officially my 5th day in the city of Columbia when I was approached to convert to my own family of religion (christianity)...at the ZOO. Yes, it occured while I was standing listening to the diving demonstration in the aquarium portion of the zoo. Maybe it was the fact I was alone. Possibly the fact I was wearing shorts (it's 90 degrees...don't give me a funny look when I wear shorts and you wear long pants). Maybe it was just the fact that I had my COCKS hat on - obviously I needed saving. A young girl maybe 13 years old- sticks a pamphet in my hand saying will you read this when you have time. I was kinda dumbfounded, not to mention trying to pay attention to the demonstration. What did the pamphlet say you ask... HELL: Suppose it's true after all? Ms. Robin Sheffield and the Good News Publishers wanted me to seriously consider if Hell really did exist. And if I have received Jesus Christ as my Savior. If I was more lucid I probably should have said I'm Christian don't try to sell me on my own religion. But probably worked out for the best, I would not have wanted to make a scene at the zoo. No, I like the zoo.

I was shopping at my new favorite grocery store: Publix, just in case you were wondering. I was picking up some yummies- chicken, steak, lamb, ground beef, celery, onions...normal stuff. Strolling through the frozen food isle, when I see a guy late 20s early 30s, who starts opening every door and pulling out lots of frozen dinners. Maybe I gave him a funny look. If I did, I don't remember it. After his quick throwing boxes into shopping cart action, he walks past me. Apparently, I need an explanation for this weird behavior. He informs, "My girlfriend is away for the week. What am I supposed to do?" Shrugs his shoulders. I say, "Aww poor thing. Good luck with that." Shoot him off a little smile. Saw him at the check out line and he smiled back and laughed.

Random, I know totally.

I'm going to say it here only once because I think I can handle it. I don't want to become a whiny crazy person, who just talks about missing certain people. Just think whenever you read my posts...this is in the back of my head. All the time. But I will only say it once. I miss Andrew.

Eggshell Walls

Indeed, that would be the color of all of the walls inside of my apartment- Outside of the kitchen which has some super cool blue-ish gray striped wallpaper and the bathroom wwith yellow tiles. I intend on putting a couple of posters up soon. I keep putting it off actually. I was going to today...but I got so busy- me busy already???- that i just didn't feel like doing it.

Thanks Dana, Jen, and Jinx. Helped me out a lot. I'll admit it- it has taken me about a week to get over it- as well as several tissues and the inability to see out of my contacts, but I think I have things worked out. I tend to be a prefectionist...okay yes all the time. Lately, I have been holding myself to this expectation that when I get here *instantaneously* I will have my apartment all made up, I will know my way around the city, and I will be able to meet some super cool people. I was holding myself to an impossible timetable. Totally absurd. Today was a good day. I didn't really miss anyone. Okay-scratch that...I missed my mom cause she would have loved to go to the zoo with me, or a couple of my coworkers from Brookdale cause they would have loved the Garden portion. But it wasn't overwhelming sad. It was a good thing. By the way- I put some pictures up from my trek to the zoo on facebook if you care to see. The zoo was awesome. The garden will be a great place to go once it gets a bit cooler- may be a nice retreat when I need to not think about math, or maybe to think about math - get a little inspiration. I think what is also helping me is that fact that I am trying to give myself something to explore everyday- it may not take me all day - like the zoo, but at least it gives me the lay of the land. Like I walked to the post office and then took a drive out to find the nearby Kohl's. Yes, sue me. I am from Jersey and it's a little disconcerting not having 15 malls to choose from and only have to drive 15 minutes to get to them. I think tomorrow I may take a stab at the State Museum. There also seems to be a cool little theater group nearby my now new favorite grocery store that I may try to catch a show at sometime soon. I'm sure once classes start I'll find things to do on campus. But I feel better about everything here - - I guess that is pretty much the short of it. If anyone desires to suffer through the heat, you are more than welcome to come hang at my place. I do have a wonderfully personally assembled by moi futon.

Ugh I got totally waylayed here. Talking to my mom I've totally lost my train of thought. I'll write another entry later sometime.

Layover

Well, the big trip has thus commenced. I am stopped here in Christiansburg, VA for the evening. Tomorrow we attack the last 4 hours of the trip to Columbia and then unpack like crazy people. I was amazed that we could fit all the random crap I decided I needed into both the suv and my own Happy car. Added bonus you can actually see out the rear window as well. Feel kinda nervous about everything. I am starting to miss everyone terribly. What will I do without Becks- rough going bar hopping by yourself, or talk about boys and such. What about Suzer- who can i share my love of beer, Soco, Harry, and whatever seems to cross my mind? I already have limited contact with Andrew...and this next month just makes talking and sharing experiences just that much tougher being on either coast of the US with little cell ability. Yes, yes, and several others...I am just very tired from my 8 hours of driving today.

Guess the long and the short of it is...I'm starting to feel overwhelmed at the prospect of this really being my beginning- I'm not sure I am ready for this.

Brew at a Zoo?!?!?!

I was googling for fun stuff to do in Columbia, seeing as I might have a couple of days before the insanity begins there and I came across the famed Riverbanks Zoo. It just so happens that they are anticipating my arrival to South Carolina on August 5th with this wonderful event.

BREW AT THE ZOO:
Introducing an extraordinary tasting event…
Brew at the Zoo - Where the Long Necks Are

Saturday, August 5 - 7:00-9:30pm (Rain or Shine)

* Discover a new brew or sip an old favorite.
* Sample a variety of domestic, microbrew and specialty beers.
* Learn the cold facts from an Anheuser-Busch Brew Master.

Music by The South.

I think I might just have to take a break from the unpacking to visit the zoo.

Where did July go?

So I’ve been a little neglectful. July has been absolutely crazy- yet soo amazing! I do feel a bit run down though with all of my running here and going there business. I suppose a recap is in order.

Andrew had block leave- Hurray!! So we spent most of it together:
Hung out at a barbeque, chilled at Rusty’s for the 4th (It was great seeing everyone, cause I know I don’t have much more time here in Jersey.), spent 3 days at Ocean City (Andrew schooled me in skee-ball much to my dismay…although I didn’t do to bad once we found the games with the 100 point holes), went to the Baltimore Aquarium, Gettysburg, and Hershey Park (yummy Chocolate World!!!). It was a whirlwind 2 weeks- but wonderful at that.

Last week I saw the Big Mouse in Disney World. Major memories- more bug bites than I ever imagined, half-yard Guinness at the Rose and Crown, Big Thunder Mountain “Hang on to your hats partners, cause this here train is the wildest ride in the WILDERNESS!!!”, yummy food at the California Grille, crazy Star Wars pictures (which reminds me, I need to scan so you all can see them, hurray facebook!), oh my brain isn’t thinking anymore, it was all just so much fun.

And now, I have 3 days of work left. It has been a little sad cleaning out my desk. After two years I have accumulated a massive amount of just...for lack of a better word- stuff. I keep asking myself why the heck I had this stuff in the first place. I have rid my desk of most of that stuff now. All I really have left are some text books, and a bunch of office supplies. Within the next week I have the really big task of getting everything squared away for the move. I want to say I have everything- somewhere in my house. So maybe I’ll make it like a scavenger hunt- search for all the basic things I need. I am getting antsy about it- and I feel that in my shoulders and such. My normal calming activities help a bit but not really. Knitting only really lasts about an hour for me, and my brain wanders too much to read my books for any long amount of time. I feel like I should be doing something, but there really isn’t much to do. I guess I’m also getting nervous about school again. I love school...I love learning, but I have a tendency in the first week or so to be a basketcase about deadlines- even end of semester ones. Totally overwhelmed by the handing out of the syllabi. I am going to try to see if I can keep that to a minimum...but the tension in my shoulders grows every day as we get closer to August 4th and move time.

I guess between packing...if I have anything else to write I’ll try to…and hopefully by August 24th (first day of classes) I’ll definitely have internet access again. In the mean time- maybe I’ll meet up with Lynnea S., my fellow inferno alto Sarah. Suzer is coming to visit on Saturday and if it isn’t raining we should be able to catch Seussical at Plays-in-the-Park. If anyone wants my South Carolina info, if I missed you in my mass email (I never can manage to keep tabs on who gets them or didn’t), shoot me off an email and I’ll get that to you. Maybe I’ll see Clerks 2- Brookdale reference- yeah I worked there. I suppose that is it then. Catch ya on the flip side.

Weird Dream

I must share this little dream here since I normally do not remember any dreams when I sleep. I wasn’t feeling well yesterday, so I went home early. I had a bit of ramen noodle, which is the epitome of lazy seeing as I had perfectly good chicken broth to use in the refrigerator. After having the ramen, I was so tired and just wanted to sleep.

Hence the dream: I remember chewing something- not gum…but had the substance/texture of gum. I was at home. All of a sudden I bit down on the substance, and one hears a loud crack! Broken tooth. I run up the stairs to the bathroom with the intention of spitting everything out and cleansing it with some salt water. For some reason, *this part I don’t understand* there were jail bars around the countertop area of my bathroom. At this point, for some reason I was still chewing on this gum-like substance when I remember breaking my back left molar. There was a door in the jail bars, which I opened up to get access to one of the sinks. I decided to do what any normal person would do- spit everything out. Something was wrong about it – I spit out all of the teeth from my lower jaw, and was spurting blood like *like I don’t know what spurts blood* and it just didn’t stop. I, being the mathematician I am, was counting the teeth as I spit them out...and there were definitely more that 16 that came out of my mouth. Odd thing was I don’t remember losing my upper teeth at all. Then I woke up with a slightly painful jaw.

I guess that the teeth mean I’m anxious about a big change…or that I need a new way of thinking about a problem to get past it. I’m a little confused on what the jail bars mean though.

Anyway, I only have one more day of work this week, which is very exciting. I think I need to give Happy car a wash, and a clean on the inside...it is starting to collect a lot of dirt.

Catch ya on the flip side.

Ack!

One- Last Thursday I went to the doctor for a physical…and hurray got a Tetanus shot. They tell you aww...it’ll only hurt for a little while. Bull-cookies. I must be the like one in hundred thousand who gets some stupid reaction that is outside the norm. Three days later, I am unable to lift my arm above my head without pain. Plus I have a wonderful red swollen *it looks like I am growing an orange off of my arm* parting gift where the nurse hit me with the needle. Needless to say, I am not a happy camper. Oh the sore throat doesn’t make life any better either.

It hit me today that my time is running out here. I really should get my ass in gear and ready for my big move. Hello!!! Wake up Theresa...all you have is a futon and a laptop. Happy- bought a new MacBook Pro. It is so sleek and wonderful. Yeah, I sing its praises. But that is off topic. I just feel very ill-prepared for this whole move. I suppose I just have an unhealthy outlook that I’ll bring everything with me...and *swish and flick* my apartment is nicely furnished, with every amenity I could ever dream off. Maybe I am just having trouble foreseeing what it is that I will want or need down there. Plus I don’t want to pack everything under the sun. I just feel out of sorts about the whole thing. Guess that means I should probably do something about that right??

Only 13 more days left of work!!!!

Happy Update

Yeah, I figure I have had enough time to mull over my Texas trip and give a good *ie, not bouncing off the wall, hyperactive* post about everything.

First-> Jersey pride…Everyone knocks on Jersey about the smell...Jersey: the Garbage State. I think very few people have had the opportunity to drive in El Paso alongside Mexico. I pride myself in having spent time in several states, and I admit that Jersey does have its own brand of air. But sheesh, driving on I 10...that smell really takes the cake. It really takes the cake. So I don’t think anyone should say anything about Jersey until they have smelt that air straddling the US-Mexico border. With that taken care of, I should get on to more interesting topics.

The flight Wednesday evening was a little crazy. The weather wasn’t very helpful. Boarded the plane in Newark, pushed off from the gate, to only sit for 45 minutes before getting clearance to get off the ground to fly to Dallas. Thank goodness I stayed on the same plane for the connection to El Paso. I probably would not have made my connecting flight then. The first 3 hours were uneventful. On the leg from Dallas to El Paso, I made a friend- a lieutenant whose unit just moved from Ft. Bliss to Ft. Hood. It made the hour flight go by really quickly. I got the low down on El Paso and all of that jazz. Look at that, I made friends with someone in under an hour…I am amazed.

Got into El Paso at 10:30 ish at night. Yeah, that would be 12:30 eastern time. I had gotten up at 5:45 that day to get ready for work. I was running on fumes. Andrew picked me up at the airport, and we got some Sonic that really did a number on both of our stomachs. By the time we decided to hit the sack, it was very much after midnight. Such a long day.

Unfortunately, Andrew had to get up for PT and go to work Thursday. So I had Thursday to myself- spent some time in the morning heat outside, had a little breakfast, watched some World Cup Soccer, made lunch, read a book, watched the financial channel *I blame my father for the urge to watch financial news at any point in the day*. That evening, we headed out to the colonel’s home on post for what turned out to be a nice barbeque get-together. I met a whole bunch of people, whom I can’t possibly remember at the moment. It was a lot of fun. We left thinking we would catch a showing of Cars. Before the movie, I got a guided tour. When Andrew says it sucks out there...yeah, it really does. The tour tired both of us out, so we nixed the movie and went back to his apartment. We enjoyed the rest of the evening in.

Friday morning, we hit up the El Paso Zoo. It was fun. I managed to avoid getting sunburned, which was very happy. It was interesting to see how the animals dealt with the heat. We then hit up Andrew’s favorite restaurant for lunch, which was yummy. Spent the afternoon inside- and got ready for a little shindig later that evening. The party was fun- met another bunch of people. *Thank goodness Andrew didn’t try to quiz me on who was who...I would have failed miserably.* After the party, we stopped for some pizza and chilled out for the rest of the night.

Saturday was a somewhat sad day. We realized the time was no longer a friend. We met up for lunch with Andrew’s friend Atkins and his wife. Good conversation, some laughs, good food. Made a little pit-stop at the mall...then hit up the super-market for some supplies. I decided a while back that I would make dinner Saturday evening. After gathering up what I needed, I set to work. I made some homemade sauce and fried up some meatballs. Dinner was some yummy macaroni with meatballs. I packed up the leftovers- so Andrew has some yummy food for when he comes back from the field this week.

Sunday was rough, rough leaving. My flight got delayed for an extra hour, which gave us a bit of extra time. It was just really hard leaving. The entire trip just seemed to fall into place. I think those couple of days were some of the most fun, enjoyable, relaxing days for both of us. Everything just felt right- that is me speaking…although I’m pretty sure Andrew feels the same way. I don’t think I could have wished for a better beginning of a relationship. Now, we see where it takes us.

In other news- only a little while longer here at work. It feels surreal. Just keep getting more and more excited about it. Oh, my tomato plants all have tomatoes growing on them. I feel like a proud parent. Grow little tomatoes grow!! I can’t wait til they are ripe, and I can make fresh sauce or something like that. Ooo lala. Other than that, I am enjoying the warm weather, and some early leave times from work.

Catch ya on the flip side.

Paying for it

I am not going to lie. I feel like crap today. Must be the higher power deciding to punish me for the enjoyable weekend I had.

Friday was an exciting day. I made a trip to IKEA, which is now officially my favorite place for random gadgets and furniture. To be honest, I do now know why all of a sudden I actually enjoy looking at furniture. It has always been a chore. I suppose the upcoming freedom that has inspired me so. But while I was perusing the merchandise, I found so many things I wanted. I restrained myself and only picked up a futon. It was fun trying to see how it would fit in Happy Car. But it managed to work itself out.

I met up with everyone(Beck, Rusty, Cris *hurray*, Josh, Scott, Steve, James, and a couple of people I really should remember their names...but alack I do not) to celebrate Rusty’s birthday. Lots of fun, laughs, dancing, and drinking.

Umm, Saturday. Yeah I don’t think I did a thing on Saturday. I watched some movies and did some cleaning. Oh, I did my first picking from my herb plants. I got a lot of huge basil and massive quantities of parsley. They smell absolutely delicious.

Sunday was absolutely wonderful. I called up Athena to go to the Seafood Festival in Belmar. The day was perfect- 70ish blue skies…little puffy clouds here and there. We enjoyed the weather, the food, and the beach. I remembered to put sunscreen on my face, which is awesome. Yeah. I returned home only to have my arms look like lobster claws. Hurray, for them being bright red.

I suppose part of my feeling horrible is due to the sun exposure. But Sunday was too amazing to not be outside. Second, probable culprit is having three to many zeppoles yesterday. I can not get enough of that fried dough. I just feel my arteries waving little white surrender flags. I can only imagine the number of years I have decreased my life by eating those scrumptious treats. Thirdly, my long Monday schedule switched. I now start an hour later. Yes, to anyone else that would be amazing, not I. The extra hour has thoroughly wiped me out. In other words, I am a cranky cranky me. At this point I couldn’t give a flying rat’s behind if you need math help today. I am sunburned, working 12 hours, and really just feel totally uninspired to do one damn thing this week.

I am holding out that the rest of today will fly by, just for the students’ sakes. I just feel like I am getting more and more aggravated by the moment and I am not quite sure how to slow it down. I think tomorrow night I will hit up the St. Matt’s Carnival eat more zeppoles and anything else fried I can get my hands on. If anyone wants to join, I would love the company.

Desperately wishing for a nap or some other pleasant distraction.

Columbia: A First Look

This past week I took my first trip down to South Carolina. Twelve hours in the car with Dad was well- a wonderful oldies music sing-fest to be quite honest. We managed to find a couple decent rest stops on the way down that chop up the trip nicely. The regular Strasburg, VA stop (the one we stop at when seeing my bro in Blacksburg) and a second stop in Statesville, NC. So the driving was more like 4.5 hours, 4.5 hours, and another 2.5 hours. What is great is that it one doesn’t have to remember 18 different roads to get from here to there.

Once we got to Columbia, we hit up a restaurant called the Mellow Mushroom that my parents had tried when the stopped in SC a couple of weeks ago. Our waiter actually remembered my father from the previous trip. Food was very yummy. Good pizza joint, which I will need to remember to frequent, not to mention a nice selection of beer. We packed it in early because we were both exhausted.

We started the next day by hitting up the SC bookstore. Yeah, I like bookstores. My father loves bookstores. We got a full complement of head-ware. I got my much wanted Cocks hat. Yes, the hat has the word cocks on it. I am fully aware of that. Also for the giggles, I picked up a shirt that says- Cocky is my homeboy. Yeeaah, the mascot’s name is Cocky the Gamecock.

Apparently, the school was running freshman orientation that day as well. *One of the very many orientation sessions- they run them through the month of June.* You don’t know how tempted I was to just jump right in to one of the tours and feel like a freshie. But I restrained myself, plus I really didn’t have the time before looking at the first apartment.

First apartment- I have one word for it- Dumpy. It was not well kept at all. Yes they had washer/dryers in the units, but they were extremely tiny. By tiny, I mean tiny. I think it was smaller then half of the suite in Witwer sophomore year. Not to mention the fact that I had to pay utilities on top of the rent :oP. I think the only saving grace was the 10 minute walk to the Math building. And even that was bad, because it was almost a 45 degree steep hill to get there.

Second apartment = Great. I am will pay through the nose for it, but it really is great. Fifth floor. Utilities included. 200 square feet bigger than the first apartment I looked at. Parking space, pool, fitness center. There is even a little balcony- maybe I’ll keep a little garden out there. 5 minute walk to the Math Department. Across the street from the police department and the library.

The campus was beautiful. For having made a decision without actually seeing the place I was quite proud of myself. There is green everywhere. Trees, grass- shaded areas. While walking around you could just feel the history *okay maybe, it isn’t quite the right history* but history nonetheless. The buildings just had a character about them- like they had seen just about everything, warm and welcoming. I guess I had almost the same feeling as I used to walk around Dickinson’s campus. There is just a wealth of prior knowledge that you can feel in the campus.

I guess that is my little snapshot of Columbia. I think I will really like it there.

By the way it is really boring here at work. It is very dead. I hope that tomorrow things will be pick up with the start of the second session.

What else is going on- Beckie’s birthday is Wednesday. Hurray birthday!!! Try to hang out with Rusty and Cris- hurray for Cris being up from FL. This weekend is the big Seafood Festival in Belmar. I think I’ll be hitting that up, maybe get some of the gals from work in on the fun too. Maybe I’ll start packing for Texas :::wink-wink:::.

mid-week hump

Well the wedding…went well I suppose. Everyone looked fabulous. People were shocked at the high heels. My feet were shocked for the next few days. Hurt like the devil. Poor tootsies are not used to being in the position for so long. But I enjoyed myself- as much as one could when you are constantly asked- “So when is your big day going to be?” “Your time is coming up soon.” Thanks a lot for all the pressure. Just makes me want to stick a sharp object in my eye. Yeah, thanks.

Anyways I guess that is about it. Besides my saying…for the first time since I’ve been out of school, I actually feel like life is in motion. Like I am moving in a good direction. I am going next week to SC to look at a couple of apartments. A couple of really nice deals. Both within walking distance of the campus. I am very excited to go. I think I may email the grad director see if there is a chance I could stop in to take a look at the department, maybe meet a couple of professors or other grad students. Find out what the new *home* will be like. I’m so excited to have so much planning and to-do-ing to be done. Not to mention it’s hit me that really 2 months is all I have left. Two months- probably the biggest change of my life. And that doesn’t include the whole accent thing. I am pretty sure I’ll be kept quite busy for me to really have enough time to bask in the change. There is one thing I will miss though- the Puppy. To bad about the no pets rule.

Summer 1 Session, ALREADY?!?!?!

Yes, indeed. Today begins the 2006 Summer sessions at BCC. Boy am I excited! :::::sarcasm dripping everywhere:::::

My entire family has been laughing at me. Cause of the incident with the bird...but I've made things worse. Apparently, some animal attacked either a groundhog or mole nest. Mother is gone, and the babies have all scattered. Found one in the driveway near my rear wheels. Poor thing I think was injured by whatever raided the nest. It kept trying to curl up in a little ball. It is about the size of a quarter. I was what one would call distraught. I don't know what has incited this need to save the tiny animals. I moved the little guy to the side of the house under some foliage. I really hope with all the rain today the poor thing does not get drowned. Two deaths would bother me terribly. I'm actually waiting on the third. Weird stuff like this always comes in threes for me.

The bachelorette party was so much fun. I've missed hanging with the cousins. Less then a week until the wedding. Have the purty dress all hung out to try to get the wrinkles out of it. I need to get used to the high heels. *High heels* I will still be shorter than everyone else, but god at least I can say I tried. Not to happy about the seating arrangements<-always stuck with old people at the table. :o( In any event, it will be quite a production.

In other news, some decisions have been made. Like 2 trips to Columbia- beginning of June and beginning of July. One trip to Disney World in July. A trip to Texas in the middle of June. I figure in the next couple of years I won't have the funds to make such fun trips, might as well get them in now.

The anticipation is building. Catch ya later.

Stuff..

You Are 87% New Jersey!

Wow, you're totally Jersey. There's no doubt about it. Congratulations, and always be proud to be Jersey--it's a great thing to be!

How New Jersey Are You?

Yeah. Today I came back from a trip to Home Depot and Kohl's. Picked up some stuff for my tomatos, and went...oh lala to get some makeup for the upcoming cousin's wedding next week. But when I pulled into the driveway and opened my car door, i saw a tiny baby bluebird lieing on the driveway. it made me soo sad. The poor thing was just losing the baby fluff. You could start to see the growth of some beautiful new blue feathers. I couldn't figure out how it could have made it to the driveway. Poor poor thing.

I managed the extra grad schools situation. Still going to South Carolina. Going to make a couple of trips out there in the next two months.

Bachelorette party tomorrow. That is about all the excitement I have for you.

You people are lucky effin' ducks

I need to get this energy out. This is absolutely wrong. This should not be happening. I think I've dropped the f-bomb and any of it's derivatives continuously for the past hour and a half. Think opening sequence of Office Space...yeah me in the car...that's how I've been.

Today I received an email from NC State. Yeah NC effin' State. My admission decision was ready. Oh it's May 4th...it must just be my rejection letter. What do I find-> ACCEPTED. No money, no assistantship. Accepted on May freakin' 4th. What the hell is the matter with you people?!?!!?

Wait. It gets better. OOOOOO so much better. After work I get an email from a professor at...of all places...Virginia Tech. Yes, V effin' T. Oh, we were wondering...although you may have made other plans...are you still interested in Virginia Tech for graduate school??? WTF!!!!!!! Excuse me, you wait until May freakin' 4th to ask me if I was interested in your school. I freakin' drove 7 hours to come to your Visitor's Day. No, I wasn't interested at all. :oP

God damn it all to hell. I thought I was only supposed to be confused during the time period of say...March 15 to April 15. Not f____in' May 4th. I guess I'm the best of the bottom of the barrel.

Jesus H. Tap-dancing Christ-> it's all your fault.

Kona's birthday

First, let me start off by saying I love watching House. How could you not??!? Especially when stuff like this gets said->

Cuddy: With the police officer’s death, we are at Biohazard level 3.
House: Oh call Jack Bauer!

Anyway, on to the somewhat real update. *Forgive me Giesey, if you check this out, if you don’t want anyone else to know…but I can’t not talk about it.* I suppose the major happening is the fact that I’m totally oblivious to everything around me. Maybe not oblivious…that is probably the wrong word, more like me being unmindful of what has been going on. Even Suzy has been trying to convince me of it for while, a long while to be exact. Maybe I knew…and just wasn’t recognizing it, although I have no idea why I would do that.

WTF is she talking about?? The big deal is the mutual enjoyment of our company, Giesey and myself. Brilliant. It has all come out due to my own ignorant needling. So therein lies the difficult things. I shouldn’t call it difficult. Frustrating is the best word. The timing just…makes everything absolutely nuts. We both have our hands tied. Army, graduate school. Texas, New Jersey/ South Carolina. Even my wonderful brain is having trouble wrapping around this little brick wall. Suppose I need to try harder, or we just need to leave things in their current state, which isn’t a bad thing…don’t get me wrong.

Yeah, I’m not quite sure what else to write. Just that is my news. Guess I’ll check in later.

Happy May?!?

Wow...holy....macaroni.

Yeah...did the entire month of April just pass me right by?? Apparently it has.

I'm here trying to while away the last half hour of work for the evening. I really need to bring more enticing books to read. But that is besides the point. I guess I have some updates...although I think I want to properly write them out, or else it will just come out weird. How about I just keep you all on the edge of your seats...yes that sounds like a wonderful idea.

I have managed to make it an entire 6 days by myself in my house. Only another 7 to go. I have not yet hit the wall wondering about food, so I am quite proud of myself. Yesterday, I made a tray of baked ziti. Great...that will last me forever if I really want it too. Although I won't lie (italian and all)...I can really only do ziti like 2 times a week...not more than 3. I have other wonderful meal ideas in store as well- turkey...steak...chicken...maybe a meal out!??! So many possibilities.

My puppy has been quite depressed through all of this. I guess he really is that attached to my parents. Sometimes he wanders around the house...like..."Where the hell are they?" "They really didn't leave me with this crazy person, did they?!?!?!" "What do you mean 4 in the morning isn't the best time to wake up?"

Wednesday is my last class ever at BCC. Giving the final exam, which is great. Means I have nothing to think aobut or prepare. Hurray!!!

By the way...does anyone have a riveting reads for me? I am in such a bad spot...I'm actually reading a book on...personal finance...and one of the many physics texts i had to buy but in typical college fashion never used. If not I suppose I could always go do my obligatory read through of the Harry Potter books again, see if I can tie everything together. (Spring/Summer 2007- Order of the Pheonix movie...and Book 7 slated to be out!!!) And please something that is long that will keep me occupied for a while.

I swear sometime this week...I will actually update update, not that some of you don't already know what I could quite possibly write about.

Teacher

Yeah, I got my scores back from the praxis exam. For those of you who don't know...it's the standardized exam that one needs to pass in order to send you on your way to teacher certification. I passed with super flying colors. To pass in NJ you need to get a 137 out of 200. Ms. Resa got a 175. Take that. Puts me in the top 15% of all previous test takers. ETS was even nice enough to send me a certificate of my achievement. Damn....now if only I had gotten such a good score on my math subject test. Oh well. At least I have something to fall back on if grad school stinks to high heaven.

umm anyways...so yeah.

Stuff coming up. i only have 3 more lectures left for the semester...and 1 exam. Next couple of weekends I'll be on my own here. maybe I'll go out and get lots of beer and then have a contest to see how much of it I can drink, by myself.

Anyways...avoiding work, like it is the plague. Catch ya later.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming

Big big news all. I figure I can be a dispersal mechanism seeing as most of the family knows and such.

Mom finished up her six months of chemotherapy. So the doctors all got together and ran the diagnostic tests to see where things stand. From what it looks like, the cancer isn't running amuck. Actually they saw little to no tissue activity. So it looks she is in the clear for now. There is the usual periodic tests and exams and such. But things look great.

We celebrated with rum and coke that evening of the meeting.

Now maybe my life will go back to some normalcy. Maybe.

Suzer is coming to visit this weekend. Might hit up the NB bar scene. That will be interesting. So excited.

I wish this day was over...so I could spend the evening outside.

Goooo 'Cocks!

Yeah. So Thursday night, I finally sat down and made my decision. This whole situation had seriously messed me up the past couple of weeks. Threw my whole body out of whack. Lack of an appetite, not really wanting to do anything, serious stomach issues. Now that it is all done I feel so relieved.

So the big story was that ODU was so...disgusted about my not giving them a decision, that they gave me until Friday to tell them yes or no, or else they were going to retract their offer. Since I don't let anyone get the better hand...I told them no...and that next time if they want a quick decision they should tell people in the acceptance letter when they would like a reply. Dick-weeds.

A good moral in life: Always make friends with the secretary. Because when shit hits the fan...they usually know who to call. So I spoke to the grad secretary at VT- so helpful...she said I'm really sorry, but I haven't seen anything come across my desk for you. So you know what...you do what you want to do.

Final Answer: University of South Carolina to the rescue. I realized this week that they actually wanted an answer by the 31st. I was like schnikeys!! But I sent along an email to the grad director. He sent back a response, and it was so kind...and helpful, and happy that I had chosen to go there. It was like night and day compared to all the shit I've gone through with these schools. I guess I'm relieved.

Beck and I went out Friday night. So good to hang out. Got to meet the new boy. He's nice and sweet. So I approve. I'm happy for her. Yey beck.

Anyways...catch ya on the flip side.

Ummm yeah

So right now I am at Tech...the whole Visitor's Day sh-bang is over and I've been somewhat recounting almost every dumb thing I've done since the start of senior year at Dickinson. I should have taken the subject GRE then. I should have applied to schools then. I would have had a marginally better chance. I knew I liked doing the research...I should have just gone with it no matter how freakin' burned out I felt at the end of that year. I shouldn't have waited 1+ years to do applications.

Oh, Vanderbilt sent a no about a week and a half ago. I know NC State sent out acceptances *it's always good talking to some of the other gals here*, so I must be stuck in the "-uck me over and tell me no on April 10" pile. I was somewhat glad to hear that no one who was here over the weekend had heard from Duke either. But I think I'm certain what answer it is that I will get from them. I thought I heard something last night while wandering around that I was going to get in to Tech...but who knows...more than half the people there were drunk. Yes, the professors very much included. I love *wet* departments.

And you all thought I was somewhat smart. How is that for a kick in the face? I'll just go back to knitting, and teaching people how to multiply negative numbers, cause that is about all I am good for.

On I guess what would be considered a brighter note- I really did like the grad students here. They were very cool. Funniest thing I guess is that I ended up hanging out with this guy John, from Millersville, who knows the guy (Andrew) who gave literally the exact same talk as me at the Student Conference I had to give my billiards presentation (fortunately I went first). Oddly enough, I found out the Andrew is at Rutgers in NB doing graduate work there. Effin' small effin' world. So maybe if emailing occurs I might go say hello to him at some point. Who knows.

I guess maybe I'll go and start writing out some notes and such for my class even though I have no material with me. Or maybe some test questions or something. I'll just sit in the room debating my slim dinner options.

Mr. Rogers redeems himself...

Relationships are like dances in which people try to find whatever happens to be the mutual rhythm in their lives.

Yeah, that actually applies right now. Good job Mr. Rogers.

I probably shouldn't share....but one of the ladies I work with...their mom passed away last Friday. I am at a loss for words. It almost starts me traveling down a road...I don't think I can handle right now. Okay...i can't write about it or else I'll just start crying at my desk...for any myriad of reasons.

signing off.

Ahem, Message for Mr. Rogers

Yesterday's Mr. Rogers quote:

Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.

Unfortunately Mr. Rogers....you are wrong. You can check to see if sets are equally infinite by determining the cardinality (a measure of the number of elements in a set) of the set. If you can create a one-to-one mapping between a set and the set of natural numbers, then we have two sets which are countably infinite, and thus as you say "equally infinite", or countable. If we can't find that relationship, then the set is uncountably infinite, like the real numbers, which is more infinite than the natural numbers.

Mr. Rogers, you need to research a little bit about what you are talking about before you make a blanket statement like that. I've looked up to you for so long, and then you say such a thing like we can't compare two infinite things...you have shaken my faith in you.

I don't know what to do with myself now. My world has been turned upside down. I don't think I can look at Mr. Rogers in the same way again.

Yackety Yak

Grad School Update (In order of hearing back):

Old Dominion- Yes, tuition, and teaching assistantship
Rutgers- No.
U. of South Carolina- Yes, partial tuition and teaching assistantship
Virginia Tech- Invitation to Graduate Visitor's Day (in my mind that is yes anyways...they wouldn't wine and dine me for nothing right??)
Princeton- No.

Still waiting to hear from:
Duke
NC State
Vanderbilt

Not a bad record so far, if I do say so myself.

Things are going well. The baby 'tism get cancelled because of the snow, so it got rescheduled. Next week is the bridal shower so that should be fun fun fun. Then the week after that I will be taking the Praxis...at get this....7:30 in the morning on a Saturday. Who does that???? why is it scheduled so freaking early???

Went out with the Beck for dinner last night. Good to just catch up, since we kept missing each other the past couple of weeks. I can't believe how quickly the weeks are flying by. Just nutty really. Only a couple more weeks til Spring Break....thank god, less students.

I'm going to get going. Catch ya later.

Football

Now, let me preface this by....I have been going through football withdrawal for the past two weeks.

I think that was the worst officiated, badly played Superbowl I have seen in years. (No, I was not cheering for the Seahawks....or the Steelers.) I just wanted to see a good game. It seemed to lack the urgency, the excitement, the thrill of this being the big game. I was disappointed. I stopped working on my lecture materials to watch this game. The time could have been better spent. I will grant that the last 20 minutes (play clock time) were intriguing. The first half was totally useless. Twiddling my thumbs could have produced a better outcome for the first two quarters.

The commercials weren't that great either. My favorite was the Disney one, with the guys all practicing..."I'm going to Disney World." The diet Pepsi commercial was :oP. I liked the prehistoric FedEx commercial. Oh the thing that I loved the most...the Dr. Seuss's Oh The Places You'll Go intro for the game. That was really amazing. I think I may have to try to find it somewhere on the internet. I thought it was a novel idea.

Blech...not feeling well. I have a dentist appointment on Friday. I'm scared. I've never had a cavity before. This is the first one I am having filled. Ever. I'm a wimp.

Lots o'fun stuff this month (NOT the dentist): baptism for the twins, flogging molly concert???, and my cousin's bridal shower. I think this requires a trip to THE LOFT to buy some purty things.

Okay, must work on lecture stuff. TTFN.

Mr. Rogers Update

Hey all-

So yeah that whole stomach food thing, hasn't really gone away. I feel like I have no appetite. What's worse is that I'm in the cooking kick...I want to make all this food, but I have no desire to eat any of it. Anyways....I've saved a bunch Mister Rogers quotes so here they are.

"Music has given me a way of expressing my feelings and my thoughts, and it has also given me a way of understanding more about life."

"Solitude is different from loneliness, and it doesn't have to be a lonely kind of thing."

"Love doesn't mean a state of perfect caring. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is right here and now-and to go on caring through joyful times and through times that may bring us pain."

"It is tempting to cling to the familiar. Just like in music, if we keep...playing in the key of C, we wouldn't have to take and risks of not making it to the key of E-flat. But we'd never know what it sounded like unless we tried. And once we've had the practice and the pleasure of making a transition from one key to the next, the subsequent times might not be quite so difficult."

"There is much more to independence than learning to master new skills. One of the most important parts of independence is learning to form new relationships with other people."

"A computer can help you learn to spell hug, but it can never help you know the risk or the joy of actually giving or receiving one."

Alright, I'm off.

So Cold I've Been wearing my jacket at work.

First, Thanks Suz, Cryssy, Dana, Laurie, and Sam. It really is quite exciting...and then not so exciting like yesterday. I got the uber thin denial letter from Rutgers.

No I am not crushed at all. It's actually quite good, cause if I had gotten accepted here...there would be a couple of serious reasons for me to contemplate staying around here. But I don't even get the chance to consider them. (Wrong I know...I am still waiting for Princeton but I seriously doubt they would send me an acceptance letter.)

Week 2 of the semester is almost done here. I am amazed at how quickly things are moving, not to mention the fact that it is just about the end of January.

I probably have stuff to grade...and I should go do that....or maybe I'll play a game of sudoku.

BOOYAH Grandma!

Okay...so I am breaking my promise to suz- no Mr. Roger's quotes tonight, too bad being at work. But I have much better news:

I got accepted to Old Dominion University's Applied and Computational Mathematics PHD program. Full tuition paid for, as well as, a 12-month stipend. How freakin' awesome is that?!?!?!?

It's funny cause tonight I was thinking about signing myself up for the Praxis exam. Now I'm not quite sure if I will do it. Kinda a waste of money if I have a school waiting in the wings.

Do I want to go there...I'm not sure yet, I have to wait until February/March until I hear back from all of the institutions, but at least I know I have a home.

I really have no desire to write my exam right now. I'm too excited.

So bad.

Sorry, I'm horrible about acting on my new year's resolution. So here is my check in. Work is hectic. We finally got settled into our new space...get this, the day before classes started. Talk about harrowingly close call.

I haven't been feeling well for the past week, no sleep, not really hungry, although it's starting to come back now. I had my 4 hour class. I nearly lost my voice afterwards. I need to remember to drink more water during the class to keep my throat in working order.

I started my big knitting project- blanket. I'm going to try to do it in about 4 segments and see how it turns out. I hope that I bought enough yarn for it. I guess we'll see about that, although we knows if we'll see about that 1 year down the road. Might not make that color yarn anymore. Booo.

Oh, last night Beck and I hit up the movies....saw the Underworld sequel. It was a good diversion- I couldn't bring myself to watch 3 hours of Kong or Munich, much to serious. But watch out...I think the parents with their seven year old son learned a good lesson- random sex/ soft-core porn scene in this movie. So read make sure you ware watching those parental ratings. There was a huge gasp by the mother behind us. Sometimes I think people need to be screened before and throughout the child-rearing process. It's inappropriate to bring a 7 year old to an R-rated film showing at 10:30 at night. I mean really, come-on. Am I to old fashioned or what???

Ugh, I had more Mr. Roger's quotes, but they are sitting upstairs and I have no desire to run up and get them at the moment. So yeah. I think i'm going to start attacking my lecture notes, want to try to stay ahead (maybe get them all completed by spring break) then I can relax durin the last part of the semester.

Catch ya'll later.

Thanks

First- big thank you to Giesey and to Steve (even though i don't think he knows this exists), and well to all my girls who know the "drama"...I plan on dropkicking the guy to the curb...punching him in the face isn't quite my style....although the Father's Day card idea is quite fascinating. I'll have to keep that one in my back-pocket. A little reason, and not being heavily medicated really does help the thought process when it comes to things like that.

I got a calendar that has little thoughts from Mister Rogers....cause Mr. Roger's freakin' rocks the house and I thought I would share a couple with you all:

"Transitions are almost always signs of growth, but they can bring feelings of loss. To get somewhere new, we may have to leave somewhere else behind."

"I wish that many times I had heard that 'just who you are at this moment, with the way that you're feeling, is fine. You don't have to be anything more than who you are right now.' I'd like to think it's also something that's happened to me through the years, that I'm more able to accept myself as I happen to be, rather than as somebody thought I should be."

"It's really east to fall into the trap of believing that what we do is more important than what we are. Of course, it's the opposite that's true: What we are ultimately determines what we do!"

"I believe that appreciation is a holy thing-that when we look for what's best in a person we happen to be with at the moment, we're doing what God does all the time. So in loving and appreciating our naighbor, we're participating in soemthing sacred."

Ugh work tomorrow :oP

happy new year

Okay.

5 weird things about me:

1. I hate it when people sit on my bed unless I've given them express permission. I'll rip you to shreds if you come anywhere near my pillow.

2. M &M's. I must have an equal number of each color in my hand before i stuff those yummy candies in my mouth. If i pick up 3 red, 2 blue, and 2 green, I'll first eat one red....then have a red/blue/green shot at once....then eat red/blue/green in one shot to finish them off.

3. I can't have massive amounts of soda or i bring myself in to the wonderful land of migraines.

4. I have to do one sudoku puzzle during the day.

5. I'm 23 and i have the body of an 80 year old.

Break has been unbelievably busy. I can't even begin to write about it, well cause there was not much terribly exciting. Talk later...Bowl games on.
